The Amazing Beard Hat. $40.00.

As the weather turns colder, nothing will keep your face warmer than this soft beard hat! (mustache included!)
Yes, it may look a little silly, but I have gotten amazing response from my test audience.
Why?!
And what’s with the beard and moustache obsession on Etsy? If I never see a felt/yarn beard ever again, I won’t be sorry.

I don’t get a lot of the humor on Etsy. The faux facial hair thing is just one example. It’s funny in a broad kinda way as a disguise that doesn’t hide anything, like one time. Month after month of ’staches, though? I would have thought hipster trends on the street change every few weeks?

the beast must die.
Please kill it.

Steady on!
Posted by Dagnabbit on September 21, 2009 at 10:26 pm
Please note: found in the GIFT GUIDES. Again, the choices boggle the mind. Are they stoned and just fucking with us? It’s not the best marketing technique.
Posted by EtsyWTF on September 21, 2009 at 10:36 pm
Yes, sorry. I keep forgetting to mention where these things were found, although this was in the Storque.
Posted by Jennuh on September 22, 2009 at 12:09 am
I loled.
Though it looks extremely warm and would prolly be amazing in the area I live in. Lol.

This would be great for a bearded lady costume for Halloween in a cooler region.
Posted by elizabeth on September 22, 2009 at 1:27 am
oh for f*ck’s sake, the felt and yarn beards were bad enough. This will be on the front page and in all the gift guides by tomorrow, I’m sure.
Posted by elizabeth on September 22, 2009 at 1:29 am
oh, I just read dagnabbit’s post and it is already in the gift guide. jesus.
Posted by EtsyWTF on September 22, 2009 at 1:30 am
Storque and GG?! Jeez!
Posted by Dagnabbit on September 22, 2009 at 1:57 am
I was wrong. It was featured after a Storque article, not the GGs. HOWEVER, I have seen some truly crappy shit in the GGs, without much searching. Truly, they are making fun of the site when they feature what they do. It happens much too often. Or they are stoned…..

i meant my comment in a funny way, like the ‘fad’ for beards must die.
just so you know!
Posted by EtsyWTF on September 22, 2009 at 10:04 am
Yeah, I know, lol.
Posted by Lennymud on September 22, 2009 at 5:51 am
I thnk this would be a better piece if they had attached a crotcheted yarmulke.
I hope Etsy starts a trend of those cute little orthodox side curls the boys in Brooklyn are so fond of. Now THAT woudl be trendy my friend.

I’m really starting to wonder why I’m even bothering trying to sell my stuff “there”……….my stuff just can’t compete with fake mustaches and beards, faux chunks of skin with hair, “DNA” art, vagina necklaces……..
Posted by anjadance on September 22, 2009 at 3:58 pm
lol, I caught myself last night wondering how I could vaginize my scarves. Then I smacked myself upside the head.
Posted by MadeByM**** on September 22, 2009 at 10:42 pm
Did you just make up that word “vaginize”? LOL! Is that anything like organize? (organ…get it?)
Posted by Graceless on September 23, 2009 at 1:30 am
Vaginize is another word that has now entered my vocab. I’ve already said it in three separate sentences and my husband would like me to “knock it off” because “it isn’t as funny as (I) think it is”.
I think I’m going to set his auto-spelling fix feature on his laptop to change his name to Vaginize when he’s sleeping. That’ll learn him.

Is someone’s beard going to get cold?
I don’t get the beard humor either; I’m amazed that “imadeyouabeard” finally isn’t completely plastered over every halloween gift guide for the first time in rationality…
Posted by Dagnabbit on September 22, 2009 at 8:32 pm
Iif I ever saw someone wearing one of these in public, I would have to go up and start a conversation. It would be a pleasant, short one– but the whole time I would be thinking “What an asshole!”
Posted by Max on September 22, 2009 at 11:48 pm
I think the whole fake mustache/beard thing on Etsy is related to the fact that there are so many teens & college kids on there playing the hipster crafter, who are young enough to be dating guys who can’t grow a reasonable nest of facial hair yet.
What they probably need most are the crocheted beards for the nether regions.
And BTW, “test audience” in real marketing circles doesn’t mean your geeky boyfriend, his bike-weenie friends, and your younger brother.

Aarrgh – Storque & Gift Guide? And is that his High School building in the photo behind him? What’s up with the Etsy Branding Strategy?
Posted by RocksInMySocks on September 24, 2009 at 2:53 am
Would anyone ACTUALLY wear this insane hat? It’s got to be a joke. If I saw someone walking down the street in this, I’d think they’d just earned a day pass from the asylum.
Posted by susan on September 24, 2009 at 3:53 am
It would be perfect for the would-be terrorists – when it’s too complicated to actually grow a beard, but for the occasional hijacking…
Ooops- here comes Homeland Security!

I remember this one! A few years ago there was an Icelandic (maybe? can’t remember anymore) artist who created these weird beard hats. The artist wasn’t an Etsy member, mind you, and the original hats cost a small fortune.
Someone posted a link to the artist’s website on Etc, and hipsters went crazy. There were many people posting on the thread who just “had to have it” but didn’t want to pay the price the original artist asked for. As you might have guessed, several Etsy sellers jumped on the bandwagon and promised they’d try to copy this hat and sell it for much cheaper on Etsy. I’m not sure how many of them actually followed through.
I wish I could find the thread…

Aha! Here’s the original artist’s website:
http://www.vikprjonsdottir.com/
Hover your mouse over the pictures on the right and click where it says “products”. A pop-up window will open and you can a see a whole bunch of cooky, but kinda fun, designs from the same artist. Including the Beard Cap.
Posted by EtsyWTF on September 24, 2009 at 3:59 pm
Their beard hat is a lot better than this Etsy one.

For when the “soul patch” just isn’t enough.
Posted by Heather on September 28, 2009 at 7:50 pm
What etsy doesn’t understand about “trends” is that they GO AWAY.
Posted by forum rubbernecker on September 29, 2009 at 5:01 am
I especially don’t get the beards for chicks. And, like all other hipsterisms, these beards are FAKE.
Posted by pritchke on December 22, 2009 at 1:18 pm
Hey folks! I love that you found my beard hat! Thanks for the publicity. I know it’s absolutely ridiculous!!! Heck, there’s a market for everything.
Your comments made me laugh.
